Measure performance of drives, networks and SANs for optimal configuration.
Diskspd is a free and open source workload simulator app and HDD tool, developed by Microsoft for Windows. It's pretty advanced.
The download has been tested by an editor here on a PC and a list of features has been compiled; see below. We've also created some screenshots of Diskspd to illustrate the user interface and show the overall usage and features of this workload simulation program.
Test the speed and performance of connected storage devices
DiskSpd is a storage performance tool from the Windows, Windows Server and Cloud Server Infrastructure engineering teams at Microsoft.
It was designed to be used in a variety of scenarios including performance testing, capacity planning and storage subsystem characterization.
DiskSpd is a command-line tool that allows users to specify a variety of options and parameters to control the test. You can do this with their the cmd.exe or from within Windows PowerShell.
Features of Diskspd
- Automation: Execute tests on schedule.
- Comprehensive metrics: Gather data on total IO, throughput, latency and more.
- Error injection: Introduce simulated errors to test resilience.
- File system benchmarking: Measure performance of file systems.
- Flexible: Create complex tests with custom parameters.
- IO profiles: Specify precise IO patterns for testing.
- Multi-threaded: Simulate multiple user workloads.
- Network benchmarking: Test throughput, latency and IOPS.
- PowerShell integration: Use PowerShell scripts to automate tests.
- Provisioning: Create storage workloads to simulate the activity of a live system.
- Reports: Generate and export detailed reports.
- Scaling: Monitor the effect of scale on performance.
- Storage testing: Assess storage performance and capacity.
Compatibility and License
Diskspd is released under the MIT License for the Windows operating system from drive utilities. This means you can download, install, run and share the program freely without any restrictions. The source code is also open which means anybody can freely modify this software.
What version of Windows can Diskspd run on?
Diskspd can be used on a computer running Windows 11 or Windows 10. Previous versions of the OS shouldn't be a problem with Windows 8 and Windows 7 having been tested. It comes in both 32-bit and 64-bit downloads.
